Chapter 3

They’ve Got Vicki!

As I enter our suite I’m greeted with a caustic, “So this is your idea of a relaxing holiday is it?” Vicki is not happy, and I suppose I can’t really blame her. Being caught naked by a vampire and a dragon does put a damper on your holiday. Now she has her pajamas on, so that won’t happen again!

“It’ll get better Vick,” I promise with no real way of making it so. “Grandmother will fix everything and we’ll have a quiet time in the sun, just you and me.”

“I’m tempted to call that air service and see if they’re still on the Big Island and ask them to come and get us,” she answers grumpily.

“Vick,” I plead as manly as I’m able, “we’ve had one bad night, which really ended ok. This is a beautiful place, and we could be very happy here if you’d just let yourself.”

“Fine,” she says, meaning just the opposite. “But one more run in with your friends and I’m gone! Good night.”

I don’t even try to snuggle. I know when I’m not wanted.

Sometime between where the dreams are good and the sunlight wakes you up, it happens again. This time the door doesn’t creak open slowly; it is smashed open with a thundering crash. Vicki and I sit bolt upright together and see Shazan and her four henchmen enter through the hole where the door used to be. The four uglies with her look human but walk like zombies.

“Well Thomas,” she coos in her most seductive voice, “I always wondered what kind of woman you had that kept you from my bed. She’s very pretty Thomas. I hope you love her a lot because I’m going to take her now, but I’ll trade her back for the four souls you and Uucelxeroth stole from me.”

“As I remember,” I reply, “those souls were taken protecting you and the twins. Your memory is very selective. And you won’t take Vicki, I’ll go with you.”

“How gallant Thomas,” Shazan laughs, “it’s almost enough to make one think of knights and ladies and castles and such. I must admit, I hated knights, always trying to slay the dragon and free the princess. No, we’ll be taking Vicki for a little ride. She’ll be fine as long as I get what I want, otherwise, well, you wouldn’t like the otherwise.”

“Oh, and here’s your pendant back, it’s useless to me now. Tell my sister not to try to trick me again if she cares at all what happens to your precious wife.”

She says something to her men and they come slowly to Vicki’s side of the bed. I grab the table lamp and hit the closest one. He simply shakes it off and punches me so hard on the jaw I see stars, and then nothing. When I come to the sun is up, and George is kneeling by my side with a concerned look on his face, and a bloody cloth in his hand.

“What happened here Mr. Eberle?” he demands.
